Surfing in North Jutland

In North Jutland you will find plenty of opportunities to try surfing, whether you are experienced or a beginner.

Grab your surfboard, jump into the waves, and take a journey into the open sea of North Jutland. Around the coast, you will find several surfing schools, with both private and team classes. By Cold Hawaii in Thy National Park, you can learn to surf, and rent all the equipment needed for a fun day in the waves at Westwind Klitmøller and Cold Hawaii Surfcamp. Løkken has North Shore Surf, who also offers surf gear rental and surf classes throughout the summer season, for kids and grown-ups. You will also find some of North Shore Surfs courses at Skallerup Seaside Resort.

Cold Hawaii

Cold Hawaii is the term given to the stretch of coast between Agger and Hanstholm in Thy at the North Sea. Here you will find over 20 amazing surf spots next to Klitmøller and Vorupør. Cold Hawaii achieved its name because the wind conditions in the area are much like the one you will find on Hawaii.

Surfing is the perfect opportunity for fun on the water, ride the waves on a surfboard, usually around 2-3 meters in length. Paddle out in the sea where the waves are best and control the board with your body weight. Try to stand up when you get the right wave. If you know how to swim, and love the water, then surfing is just right for you, no matter your age. Surfing is relatively easy to learn, but hard to master. It takes balance, patience, and willpower.
If you are a skilled surfer you will find the best conditions, big waves, and lots of waterpower, during the winter season.

SUP (Stand Up Paddle)

Stand up paddling is an alternative to surfing, all you need is a board, a paddle, and a life jacket, and you are ready to go. In all its simplicity, it means that you paddle forward while standing upright on your SUP board. SUP is one of the fastest-growing water sport activities, as it is an activity everyone can take part in. In the beach towns along the west coast, east coast, and the North Jutland fjords, you can rent SUP boards, equipment and in some places you have the opportunity to get an intro to this fascinating water sport.
So, if you have a good balance and body control, you should just get going. This is a fun sport that all ages can learn and participate in.

Kite Surfing is a fast-growing sport, which combines traditional surfing with a kite that creates propulsion. This propulsion makes it easy to reach speeds of up to 35-50 km/h. Kite surfing is for everyone in the family, though for security reasons if you are new it is best to start on a day with only little wind and in a closed bay area.

Windsurfing combines elements from surfing and sailing. The surfboard is attached to a sail that helps bring you forward. Windsurfing can be done in the sea, in fjords or on lakes, as all it takes is a bit of wind. People of all ages can learn to windsurf, though it is best to start in closed areas or lakes. North Jutland offers plenty of opportunities to go windsurfing, both along the west coast but also in the area around the Limfjord.
