Blokhus – once a fishing village – is now the center of a charming international holiday paradise with good sea food restaurants and cozy shops. The beaches, which are among the best in Northern Europe, feature beautiful white dunes, fine sand and clear water – and the water isn’t the only thing that’s blue. Blokhus’ beaches have received the E.U. beach-quality award: the blue flag.
In addition to its beaches, Blokhus itself is a lively and bustling place. Most of the shops, restaurants, inns and ice-cream bars are gathered around the bowling center and the town square. This is also where concerts and other activities take place in the summer months. There are a number of inviting shops and restaurants, the latter often with outdoor seating.
Behind the town and its beach a countryside of gentle forestry, dunes and heath land stretches, ideal for rambling, horse riding and cycling making Blokhus a popular holiday destination.
Like in many other cities in the Bay Denmark the largest attraction is of course the white beaches, which are popular among families. If you're not too fond of the water, the old bathing houses and the historic landmark is also interesting to experience, when you're in Blokhus.
If you are travelling with children, the theme park Fårup Sommerland is a must, which has been named the best theme park of the North several times.
Directly north of the town is a pleasant and peaceful area of replanted dunes: Blokhus Klitplantage, which plays host to a wide variety of animal life and at Gateway Blokhus the children can play on the large nature playground. In parts of the forest dog-owners are allowed to let their animals off the leash, and there are good views across the landscape to be had from many points. The replanted dunes in Hune and Kryle Klit create a beautiful and changing landscape. Blokhus Klitplantage measures 642 hectares and is also perfect for mountain bikers.
In and around Blokhus you’ll find a number of small museums, galleries and workshops where craftsmen can be found at work. The area around Blokhus also has its fair share of golf-courses, and the keen angler will find enough to keep him occupied – you can fish directly from the beach.
Blokhus is a city with plenty of events, especially in the summer months, where the tourists give life to the village. Every night from the 1st of July until Mid-August you will see lots of people near the Beach Kiosk. At 9 pm Blokhus Kanonlaug fires the canon and "shoots the sun down".
Also experience Blokhus Sand sculpture Festival, which shows impressive sculptures made from sand and wood every year. The world ballet is also an event with international class.
One of the town's most visited places is Restaurant Futten, which has a lovely atmosphere in an old timbered house from 1761 and offers great food. To try the wonderful fish dishes, which the coastal cities of Denmark are knwon for, we would recommend Strandingskroen or Klausen Fisk & Skaldyr in Hune.
Blokhus has a wide variety of accommodation including hotels, holiday centres, campsites and holiday cottages. Most tourists choose to stay in a summer house - find a selection in Blokhus with Feriepartner or Sol & Strand.
If it has to be romantic and a bit luxrious, then take a look at Svinkløv Badehotel, one of Denmark's best beach hotels and one of the few built in tree. The restaurant at the hotel is also one of the best restaurants in North Jutland and the nature is breathtaking.
