Some of Denmark's most iconic lighthouses are placed in North Jutland. One of Denmark´s landmarks is Rubjerg Knut Lighthouse at Lønstrup, which is expected to fall in the sea by 2020.
The sea can be a scary place when darkness falls on - especially until some hundred years ago, those shipwrecked had to sail in the blind, without a GPS or a mark of port and other dangerous areas.
The skills and knowledge of the sailors were put to the test of darkness and the forces of nature in an ocean only illuminated by the starry sky. Fortunately, the well-known King Frederik 2. established the Danish Fire Department in 1560, a major step towards a safe waters. The first task of the fire department was to mark the sea route between Skagen and Falsterbro in Sweden, a task they solved with three guys - but far from the same kind of guy we know today. At that time, a guy was just a firewood placed on an iron platform on a high platform.
65 years later, in 1627, Denmark's first rocker in Skagen was built because of the many shipwrecks on the west coast and around Grenen and its dangerous reefs. When the lighthouse was lit up and raised, the flame could be seen at 10 mile distance at normal visibility, a clear improvement over traditional lighthouses, which could only be seen from 2.5-3 miles. The rocket fox quickly became a success and other cities followed quickly. Today there is a true copy of the rocker in Skagen. In Skagen you will also find one of the 11 protected seams, located along the North Sea. You can also learn more about life at the coast at Skagen Coast Museum or explore the landscape that inspired Skagen painters.
The lighthouses, as we know them today, are in the same way helping sailors to orient themselves to dangerous coastlines, shoals and foxes - and the sailors' own position. Many lighthouses of recent centuries are huge constructions located along the beautiful but dangerous seashores. They adorn the landscape and compliment nature, but most importantly, they remind us of Denmark's importance as a maritime nation.
Modern lighthouses are often only steel masts with flashing lamps, but we take a look at some of North Jutland's most interesting and iconic guys on the list.
